Two Die in Early Morning Apartment Fire
July 24th, 2012This morning at 03:30 a fire was reported at 8 Donegal Way in Pleasant Hill. On arrival fire crews found a fully involved two story apartment spreading to the adjacent apartments. Fire crews made an aggressive interior attack containing the fire to the apartment of origin and the attic. There was smoke damage to several other apartments in the twelve unit complex. During search operations fire crews found two adult residents deceased in the upstairs bedroom of the involved apartment. Two residents of an adjacent apartment were treated on scene by Paramedics but were not transported to the hospital. No other injuries to citizens or firefighters reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but does not appear suspicious. Fire crews from Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Pacheco, Concordia, and Walnut Creek responded to the fire. The two alarm fire was brought under control in 30 minutes causing approximately $300,000 in damage.
Red Cross responded to the scene and assisted with finding temporary housing for approximately 40 personas.
Smoke alarms appeared to not have been working in the apartment where the two occupants died. Working smoke alarms save lives and are easy to test. Test your smoke alarms every month and replace batteries twice each year. The chances of surviving a fire increase dramatically with working smoke alarms!
