2 Alarm Fire Destroys Antioch Strip Mall
May 29th, 2013The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a commercial structure fire at 2309 Buchanan Road in Antioch at approximately 8:30am on Tuesday, May 28th. Upon their arrival, fire units from Antioch found heavy fire involvement in the building and the fire had already established itself into the attic. The common attic had no fire partitions and the fire was able to run the length of the attic, creating unsafe conditions that eventually led to the collapse of the roof.
Interior operations were started initially, but the attic fire presented an unsafe condition and firefighters were ordered out of the building for their safety just minutes before the roof started to collapse. Firefighters extended heavy hose lines and aerial master streams in a defensive operation to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings. The failure of the roof resulted in a total loss of the building and its contents. The building was not equipped with automatic fire sprinklers.
Firefighters were successful in containing the fire to the building of origin and no other buildings were damaged. In total, two ladder trucks, five engines, one breathing support, four command officers, one fire investigator and one fire inspector responded to the incident from Antioch, Pittsburg, Bay Point, Concord, Walnut Creek, Pacheco, Lafayette, and Pleasant Hill. Fire crews remained on the scene well into the afternoon.
The cause of the fire is undetermined. Damage estimates were not available.
