Smoke Alarm Installation Program
November 1st, 2013Working smoke alarms save lives. According to the National Fire Protection Association, nationally, 40% of all home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms. The death rate per 100 reported fires was twice as high in homes without a working smoke alarm as it was in home fires with this protection
If residents don’t have a smoke alarm in their home, they need to take steps now to purchase and install a working smoke alarm in every bedroom of their home as well as the hallway immediately outside of any bedrooms. Smoke alarms are an inexpensive safety device and can be purchased from most hardware stores – often for as little as five dollars. Smoke alarms should be replaced if they are over 10 years old. Owners of homes or apartments rented to others are responsible for furnishing functioning smoke alarms in those dwellings.
The Fire District offers a free smoke alarm inspection, testing, and replacement program. Call 925-941-3327 for more information or visit www.cccfpd.org.
