May 4th, 2012
A fire at the Muirwood apartments at 640 Center Ave. in Martinez quickly grew to 3 alarms yesterday. The fire occurred at approximately 10:30am on May 3rd and on arrival firefighters found a well involved apartment on the second floor of a three story apartment building. The fire spread to the third story apartment above the 2nd floor apartment of origin and quickly spread to the attic. The building was not equipped with automatic fire sprinklers, however the fire alarm system alerted occupants to the fire.
Fire crews initiated an offensive attack on the second story, third story, and attic fire. Crews were working inside the building with hoselines and were sent to the roof to stop the horizontal spread of the attic fire with chainsaws. The fire was eventually contained to the attic and two apartments, but not before more than 50 firefighters from thoughout the Fire District responded to the scene. Crews salvaged the contents in several apartments near the fire to minimize water damage. A total of 36 residents were displaced. The cause of the fire is undetermined, but believed to be accidental.
There were no injuries to residents or response personnel. Fire crews rescued 4 dogs from various units in the fire area.
