71 Year Old Suffers Burns in Lafayette House Fire
August 29th, 2012Shortly after noon, fire crews were dispatched to a structure fire in the 700 block of Moraga Road in Lafayette. Upon their arrival, smoke and flames were seen coming from the rear of the home and an adult male was found outside suffering from burn injuries to the hand and face. An ambulance was requested while firefighter-paramedics at the scene rendered care for the man. Firefighters initiated an interior attack and were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes, limiting the spread within the home. Moraga Road was closed for a short time during the incident. Firefighters from Moraga, Orinda, Lafayette, and Walnut Creek responded to the fire.
A fire investigator was dispatched to the scene due to the fire injury. Initial indications are the fire was caused by smoking in the presence of an in-home medical oxygen system. The man, in his early 70s, was apparently smoking while using the oxygen system and a fire erupted. He suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his hands and face.
No damage estimate was immediately available and an update on the fire victim’s status was not available.
