Three men were recognized this morning for rescuing an elderly woman and her caretaker from a fire early the morning of Oct. 14.

Rossmoor has seen the need for this emergency medical training far more often than fire suppression. In fact, over the last fiscal year, 83 percent of the callouts to Rossmoor have been for medical emergencies.

The occupants of the home, four adults and one juvenile, were awakened to the fire by the smoke alarms in the home – but even with that notification had very little time to escape and were forced to run through an area involved in fire in order to exit the home.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is pleased to announce that Engineer‐Paramedic Dave Manzeck will be awarded the 2010 Governor’s Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor for his actions in saving the life of Janet Hogan, a 74 year old woman, involved in a car accident that resulted in a near drowning after her car plunged into a canal near Walnut Creek on April 11, 2010.
