Do we still respond to fires anymore?
October 31st, 2012Does the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District still spend a considerable amount of time and resources responding to fires? Yes we do. Although the majority of our emergency incidents now involve some form of emergency medical services (EMS) response, we still spend a lot of time responding to fire incidents. The fire service has evolved into an “all hazards organization” to better support the overall emergency response needs of our community, but fires still occur and we spend a significant amount of time putting them out.
A recent analysis of our emergency incident response indicates that while EMS incidents comprise over 70% of our annual call volume, and only 4% are fire related responses, the amount of time we spend responding to EMS incidents only accounts for 50% of our total emergency response efforts. Since fires require more time and more resources and personnel to control, the 4% call volume for fires actually represents 29% of our total emergency response efforts.
