FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE ELDERLY WOMAN IN TWO ALARM FIRE
April 18th, 2012Fire crews from of Antioch, Pittsburg, Oakley, Bay Point, Concord, and Walnut Creek responded to a two alarm fire at the Delta Pines apartment complex at 2301 Sycamore Drive in Antioch last night where firefighters rescued an elderly woman from a 2nd floor apartment.
The fire was reported just after 9:00pm and arriving units reported heavy smoke and flames from multiple apartments in the two story building. The fire was quickly escalated to two alarms. The involved building had 8 apartments, separated in the center by a stairwell. Three apartments were involved with heavy fire and the undivided attic to the complex was heavily involved, forcing firefighting crews to evacuate the roof.
Most of the occupants were able to escape from their apartments uninjured with the exception of an elderly woman in one of the upstairs apartments. She was unable to escape her home through the fire in the center stairwell of the building. Firefighters made a successful rescue of the woman bringing her safely, and uninjured, to the outside of the building. Two other residents of the building were treated for smoke inhalation on scene by firefighter-paramedics; one was transported to Kaiser Antioch for further treatment and evaluation.
The fire was brought under control after 45 minutes of interior firefighting efforts.
Five of the apartments were severely damaged; however none of the eight apartments were habitable. Of the eight families displaced only two requested assistance for temporary housing. Red Cross responded to the scene and assisted the two families.
The fire appeared to have started in one of the first floor apartments; the cause is still under investigation. Damage was estimated at $600,000.
