Man Rescued from Walnut Creek House Fire

Firefighters working on the roof to gain access to the attic space and firefighters preparing to re-enter the structure after just rescuing a man from inside.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews rescued a man from his burning home on First Avenue in Walnut Creek this afternoon at 1:15pm. The call for this residential structure fire came in via a cellular 911 caller passing by reporting black smoke from the back of the home. The first arriving crew reported a room and contents fire that had spread to the attic. A search was initiated in the smoke filled home and an adult male occupant was found unconscious on the floor of the home in the involved room. He was brought out of the home by firefighters and placed on the front lawn where he soon regained consciousness and was transferred to an awaiting AMR ambulance for transport to the hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

The fire was well established in the attic and firefighters cut ventilation holes to gain access to the attic space. The fire was brought under control in 23 minutes with a first alarm assignment of five companies with fifteen firefighters, two Battalion Chiefs, and one safety officer. A fire investigator was also called to the scene. The fire cause is believed to be accidental.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
