Downtown Martinez Fire Displaces Residents
November 20th, 2013At approximately 8:15 am on the morning of November 19, 2013 Contra Costa County Fire Protection District units from Martinez, Pacheco, Pleasant Hill, Concord, and Walnut Creek responded to a commercial structure fire in the City of Martinez at 701 Main Street. Responding crews reported a column of smoke from the station and upon arrival found heavy fire and smoke conditions from the rear of the building. A total of 4 engines, 3 ladder trucks, 1 breathing support, 2 battalion chiefs, and 1 safety officer responded to the incident. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the apartment where the fire originated on the second floor and there was significant smoke damage to the other five apartment units on the second floor. The restaurant below the apartments sustained moderate smoke damage.
The fire was declared under control in less than one hour. Fire District fire investigators were on scene to complete the fire investigation. The cause of the fire is undetermined based upon their investigation. Damage to the structure is estimated at $150,000.
All occupants were accounted for and there were no reported injuries to fire suppression personnel or citizens. The American Red Cross was assisting those displaced by the fire with temporary housing needs.
